I may be moving to Philly to work at the hospital there this June. I stayed in roxborough while I visited and it seemed OK. I'm just looking for other safe neighbourhoods that are within at least a half hour commute to the hospital. Im married with 2 kids. How is Cheltenham, wyncote, glenside etc?

The areas you mention do make the most sense. You can add on Jenkintown and Abington, which are a bit nicer, but are more expensive. If you go to one of the convenience stores in the area, they have free brochures on available apartments. Or you can go into Google.

You need to be careful with Cheltenham. There are some very bad neighborhoods, and there are good neighborhoods. Stay away from those close to Cheltenham Ave. The further north the better.

Roxborough is also good, but further out. I used to live in Roxborough, and worked a block from the hospital. I now live in Abington. It's more convenient. It's about 10 minutes from the hospital.

I haven't heard of too many people recommending the public school system in Philadelphia. Depending on what you want to get out of your neighborhood is the key to finding the one best for you. Money magazine rated Moorestown, NJ (25 min drive across the Tacony/Palmyra bridge) the best town in America a few years ago. This is an affluent family area with great schools and a real sense of community. New Hope, Pa is about 30-45 min North on I-95 from Center City. It is artsy and fun. It is a great place for singles who have outgrown the frat-boy lifestyle as well as families. Right on the Delaware River it has a lot of charm and beautiful Victorian homes among the tree-lined winding roads.

You can get good neighborhoods with good school systems on the NJ side of the river. I personally believe that Burlington County NJ (Like Moorestown, Mt. Laurel, Riverton, Cinnaminson, etc) is nicer than Camden County NJ (Cherry HIl, Pennsauken, etc).

Forgot to mention ... Philly has a city wage tax if you work inside the city limits but live outside the city limits.

For your purposes, Cheltenham makes the most sense. Less than 10 min drive. just over the County line from the City. Any place away from the mall is rather safe. NJ makes no sense.

Mt. Airy, olney are near by. But far as safe, just dont go outside too much, phila is just messed up. Do you watch the news? Thats what i do, i just stay in the house, especially in the sumer time. Also dont even think about taking your kids to the playground if you see any men in the playground maybe playing basketball or whatever, cause its bound to be a shoot out. And when i say men, that includes teenage boys. Im sorry but some men makes the world bad.

My kids arent allowed to go outside and play, ride a bike, etc. My kids are so miserable. It wasnt like that when i was growing up. I was able to go outside and play. Without having to worry about being shot, robbed, or beaten up or even getting kid napped.

Wynnfield (areas off of City Line Avenue) are really nice. Jenkintown and Willowgrove are also really nice places to live. Clean, quiet and safe.
