I was also looking at photos of Boathouse Row. I went past this area last week going to Atlantic City. Absolutely awesome. Would love to see this at Christmas time.

Pronounce it the SKOO-KILL River.

The express way is pronounced "Sure-Kill expressway."

Scoo kill as the other posters suggested. A funny thing...the locals call the Schuykill Expressway (I-76) the Sure Kill Expressway.

I've heard two pronunciations - - one consistent with all the previous answers skoo-kill, but I've also hear it pronounced like shoo-kill.

"schoo-kill" like saying school without the l.

"kill" is dutch for waterway.

in colonial times it was correctly pronounced "zwy-keel" (zwy rhymes with shy) but changed over the generations.

It's pronounced "SKOO-kull" (though you sometimes hear "SKEW-kull").

You know you've been in Philly too long when you can spell it correctly. ;-)
