Hello again. Glad you got the two schools straightened out.

Penn State is located right in the middle of Pennsylvania. It is a huge campus and very beautiful. It has a reputation as a party school but also with good academics. Anyone can find what they want there unless you are a total academic geek and it sounds like you are not.

People are very friendly and nice and you will enjoy your time there. Also, Pennsylvania is lovely in the autumn with all the changing leaves, although NYC and PA are hot right now. You will enjoy going to football games (no -- not soccer -- American football). Football weekends are crazy.

Try this web site called gotobus.com Look at the "popular routes" for a bus from NYC to State College. All you have to do is find the spot to get on the bus, then sit there until it arrives in State College. You shouldn't get lost.

By the way, State College is known as Happy Valley -- because it is.

Relax and enjoy your experience in the USA.

Penn State is huge, has a good reputation (depending on the program), is also a party school, and is located in a gorgeous part of wonderful Pennsylvania, which I hope you will love.

May I advise that you focus on your academic future? That is the way to make your college education of value. I am quite stunned that you have not found out more about Penn State since you were planning to move from one continent to another to attend there, but anyway, use this last time to check it out.

As for transportation, you can take the Amtrak train from NYC to within 20 miles of State College, but it's not altogether clear to me from my quick research what's next.

Please follow this link, however, which although designed for the disabled should help you as well.

Good luck with your education at Penn State!

penn state is huge, and kind of a party school. but is also has a good academic reputation, and the main campus is known as being very competitive to get accepted to. state college is in the middle of the state, basically in the middle of nowhere, about 3 hours to philly or pittsburgh, 1 1/2 hrs to harrisburg, 4-5 hours to nyc. the town obviously revolves around the university. theres bars, restaurants & shops but not a lot, basically it is a very small town only known for the huge student population. i don't believe a train goes there. you will have to drive, fly or take a bus. Good luck

Penn State is located in State College, about 200 miles as the car drives from the center of Philadelphia (4 hour drive in good traffic). The campus is HUGE (40,000 students plus?) so you can find quiet and/or party areas. I would STRONGLY suggest checking out the psu.edu site in its entirety.

I know you can get there via Greyhound bus, not my first choice but I am not certain what other option you have. It is also possible to fly into the State College airport (SCE) on some of the commuter lines like US Air Express, but that's pricey ($260 from LaGuardia with two changes, $440 from LGA 1 stop).

The greyhound schedule is limited, you will need to contact them to get pricing, without knowing your dates I could not check availability from NY to state college.

I'm very surprised your scholarship program or the school did not give you more information, or quite honestly, that you did not do a little more research (not trying to be snarky, just preparing you for college, where preparation and research is king!)

Being a student at Penn State University Park, I can tell you anything you need to know. First of all, Penn State is ranked among the highest in academic programs out of PUBLIC Schools. Private Schools are like Harvard, Princeton etc. Penn State is also i big party school. We are usually in the top 10 party schools in the US. Our football team is legendary throughout the country. There is not one college football fan who doesn't know the name Joe Paterno. Beaver Stadium, the football stadium is the largest in the country, ( You Michigan Fans can't argue, you got sued and now have a smaller stadium) and we almost never lose at home (with a few exceptions). Penn State is located about 30 miles away from the center of PA. You could take a bus from NYC or you could drive. It's very simple to drive (not including gas prices) All you would have to do is go over the George Washington Bridge and follow I-80. It will take you through NJ and PA. There is an exit for State College off of I-80 which is the Penn State Main Campus. Just don;t travel any saturday from August 30th on, beacuse football traffic is horendous.

Should you decide to drive here are directions: (Assuming you can find your way to the bridge from NYC)

-After Traveling a little over 200 miles on I-80,

Merge onto US-220 S via EXIT 161 toward US-322/BELLEFONTE.

-Then, Merge onto US-322 E/MT NITTANY EXPY via EXIT 73 toward STATE COLLEGE/LEWISTOWN.

If you want full detailed directions, ask and I can provide them, or you can use mapquest.com and enter the place you are staying for PRECISE Directions.

Hope this helps...

Penn State has a good reputation for it's Academics. It also is well known in college sports for its Football team.

State College is in the middle of the state of Pennsylvannia and a good 5 -6 hour ride from NYC.

The cheapest way and probably most efficient is to take the bus from NYC to State College. http://www.greyhound.com/home/ You may also want to contact the university to see if they might be able to advise of another form of transportation from NYC to State College that might be easier/cheaper for you.

Hello Again, Penn State is one of the most well-known universities in the country. We rank #1 in many different disciplines. Many refer to us as a "Public Ivy" and our out-of-state tuition is starting to rival most private schools. Our library is one of the largest college libraries in the country, and our football stadium is the 2nd largest in the country. We have over 20 campus, are the largest employer in the state, and have a few Nobel Laureates on our faculty. We also have the largest dues paying alumni association in the world. Our alumni are very dedicated to the university. We have alumni in every country, and even an alumni chapter or two in the UK.

Concerning student life, you will find a variety of activities - both on and off campus. There is a club for just about anything at PSU. We do have a reputation as a party school. However, if you prefer a more calm life style that can be arranged too. There are non-drinking dorms and so forth. We work hard and play hard. The bars are located near campus for a reason. You will either love or hate football Saturdays.

Penn State is a family. Penn State is very large in numbers and in land. For years, I was an orientation leader and Lion's Ambassador. I told every new student that Penn State will be what they make it. I found it to be a close-knit family and others found it cold and impersonal.

The school's mailing address is University Park, and the town adjacent to it is State College. Both are in Centre County, PA - the center of the state. It's off I-80. Rural PA surrounds it, as Penn State started as a "farmers high school" and agriculture is one of our fortes. Before you think you are only with the cows (which are moved in the fall for Football season), there are more than 40,000 students. We have a diverse community with professors and students from all over the world.

As I said in my other posting, there are no trains to State College. You will need to take a bus or fly. I would strongly recommend contacting the office for student services. Check your paperwork; the number is in there somewhere. They handle these issues all the time and can assist you with arriving to campus safely. Also, the bus station is just off campus. You can see campus from there and anyone will be able to tell you where your dorm is.

If you want to know more, go to our web page www.psu.edu

Edit:

After reading your update I went to PSU's webpage. I found it in a minute or so.

I've been a TA at PSU; you will need to work on finding answers on your own.
